Hearing Again with Hearing Aids
Getting new hearing aids can be a very exciting, yet challenging time. Even though you may look forward to having your hearing back, it may not return the way you expect it to.
Hearing loss is irreversible, so the sounds you get from hearing aids will not sound as natural as your normal hearing would. This however, should not dishearten you, since hearing aids still enable you to hear sounds you previously were unable to hear.
It can take quite a while for a person to grow accustomed to their new hearing aids. The sound of your own voice may sound strange to you once you hear it through hearing aids. You may even get feedback and other noises from the ambience which may feel alarming and uncomfortable at first. Make sure you consult your audiologist about this during your follow up appointments in case your hearing aids need further adjustment.
Aural rehabilitation is essential when it comes to getting hearing aids. These are exercises that help you slowly grow accustomed to your hearing aids over a period of time.
You can start by wearing your hearing aids in quiet settings for an hour a day. Slowly, you can begin to increase the time duration and once you are comfortable with wearing them for a long period of time, you can begin to explore wearing them in other, noisier settings such as restaurants.
You can also learn to get used to hearing your own voice by reading aloud each day while wearing your hearing aids. After that, you can ask someone else to read to you so that you can get used to hearing the voices of others as well.
It is crucial to mentally prepare yourself for the changes you will be experiencing once you get hearing aids. You will begin to hear sounds you could not hear before due to hearing loss. This can be overwhelming at first, and you may need to take frequent breaks to allow your brain to process and adjust to so many sounds at once.
Be patient with yourself when you get your new hearing aids. Do not expect to have your hearing magically restored to its normal capacity overnight. With effort, patience, and practice, you will be able to make the most out of your hearing aids.
Always remember that your audiologist is there to guide you through this adjustment period and to answer any questions that you might have. Never hesitate to get your friends and family on board as well, in order to help you learn how to hear again. Help them help you. Hearing aids really do give you a new life in a way. Make sure you take it slow; one step at a time. Before you know it, you will be able to enjoy all the things you had given up because of your hearing loss.
